Behind the Story!
Hi, I'm Charita Martin, children's book author, educator, passionate mom of a college student and devoted wife.
My career has taken me from P-12 classrooms and school buildings to the halls of higher education, and I am currently working toward my school counseling credentials. Every step of that journey has deepened my conviction that the most powerful thing we can give a child is the feeling that they truly belong, in their classroom, in their community, and in the stories they read.
Bobby's First Day grew out of that conviction. It is the book I wished existed for every child who has ever felt nervous walking into a new space, and for every educator, librarian, and parent who works tirelessly to make that space feel safe and welcoming.
I wrote this book for the gatekeepers: the teachers who stay late, the librarians who know exactly which book a child needs, the administrators who set the tone, and the parents who send their children into the world every morning with hope. Without you, stories like Bobby's don't reach the children who need them most.
